Air Selangor to Generate 1,460 GWh Green Electricity Annually, Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2040 through Net Zero Energy Vision

30 November 2023

Kuala Selangor – Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn. Bhd. (Air Selangor) today launched the Net Zero Energy Vision 2040 initiative towards efficient sustainable energy use to achieve the goal of net zero carbon emission by 2040, simultaneously supporting Malaysia’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050.

In line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the Net Zero Energy Vision initiative launched by the Menteri Besar of Selangor, YAB Dato’ Seri Amiruddin Shari at Sungai Selangor Phase 2 (SSP2) Water Treatment Plant (WTP) aims to generate 1,460 GWh (gigawatt hour) of green electricity annually by 2040. This involves the reduction of 1,138,800,000 kg of CO2 emission (carbon avoidance) and reducing the Corporate Energy Index by 15% over a period of 15 years.

According to Acting Chief Executive Officer of Air Selangor, Ir. Abas Abdullah in his speech during the launch event, through the effort of Net Zero Energy Vision, 9.1 million consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will benefit from treated and clean water supply produced entirely using renewable energy (RE).

“Air Selangor’s Net Zero Energy Vision is not just an aspiration but it is our firm commitment that is based on the sustainability for future generations. With the implementation of this initiative, the renewable energy generated for our own use can reduce the operational costs of Air Selangor and is set to position us as the pioneer in large-scale renewable energy in Malaysia.

“We believe that with the right strategy and steps, we can achieve this vision without neglecting the needs and comfort of our consumers,” said Ir Abas.

With the total of three phases to be implemented until the 2040, Air Selangor has initiated the first phase by installing 9MWac capacity solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at the SSP2 WTP on 29th September this year. This is followed by the installation of 10.5MWac capacity PV panels at the Sungai Selangor Phase 3 (SSP3) WTP by the end of this year, and at the Sungai Selangor Phase 1  (SSP1) WTP with a capacity of 11.5MWac, expected to be completed by December 2024.

The second phase will commence from 2025 until 2029, focusing on maximising the use of renewable energy to 52% at the SSP1, SSP2, and SSP3 WTPs. It will also involve the utilisation of floating solar system technology and energy storage applications at the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant. Meanwhile, phase three from 2030 to 2040 will include utilising the water catchment areas under Air Selangor to generate more renewable energy to be distributed to assets that have not yet achieved net zero status. This will enable Air Selangor to achieve a 100% transition to renewable energy sources by 2040.

Net Zero Energy Vision 2040 is Air Selangor’s commitment to contribute to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligning with and fully supporting the sustainability initiatives of the state government of Selangor and Malaysia. This commitment aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 – Climate Action, emphasising the importance of addressing climate-related challenges.
