The Rasau Water Supply Scheme Benefits the Residents of Klang, Boosts the Economy of Selangor State

30 May 2023

Banting – The Rasau Water Supply Scheme Stage 1, which will establish a sustainable water supply ecosystem and meet the clean water needs to drive Selangor’s development when fully completed in 2025, was inaugurated by YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, the Dato’ Menteri Besar of Selangor, at the groundbreaking ceremony held at the project site in Kampung Seri Cheeding, Banting.

Also present at the groundbreaking ceremony were YB Tuan Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change; YB Tuan Ir. Izham Hashim, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Infrastructure & Public Amenities, Agriculture Modernisation and Agro-Based Industry of Selangor State; and Ir. Abas Abdullah, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Air Selangor.

According to Ir. Abas in his speech during the groundbreaking ceremony, the Rasau Water Supply Scheme is one of the long-term initiatives of Air Selangor to ensure sustainable water supply to the people of Selangor, especially in the Klang district.

“Air Selangor is always ready to continue driving the development of Selangor. As a producer of 1/3 of the total treated water in Malaysia, with 5,200 million liters per day (MLD), the development of the Rasau Water Supply Scheme aligns with our commitment to be the trusted water services provider for consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya.

“This is in line with Air Selangor’s vision to become the leading water services provider in Asia by 2030,” said Ir. Abas.

With a capacity to produce approximately 700 MLD of clean and safe treated water, the Rasau Water Supply Scheme Stage 1 comprises of nine (9) former tin mining ponds spanning an area of 489 hectares, which function as the first dual-function Off-River Storage (ORS) in the country with the capabilities of water supply and flood mitigation. In addition, the scheme also includes components of the water service system involving the construction of the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the water distribution system.

The raw water source for the Rasau Water Supply Scheme will be abstracted from the Klang River, which has been designated as a new raw water source, with the Klang River expected to contribute 20% of the total water production for Air Selangor by 2030.

The abstracted raw water will be transferred to the Sungai Rasau WTP for a complete treatment process, including ozonation, monitoring and control to ensure clean and safe treated water that complies with the standards of the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

“The capacity of the Rasau Water Supply Scheme Stage 1 to produce 700 MLD of treated water to the Klang district will reduce reliance on a single raw water source, which previously depended 100% on the Sungai Selangor Scheme.

This will also increase the water reserve margin for the Klang district from 4.3% to nearly 10% by December 2025,” added Ir. Abas.

The Rasau Water Supply Scheme Stage 2 will begin development in 2027 and is expected to be fully completed by 2030.
