In order to ensure sustainable water supply in the future, Air Selangor takes the initiative to
protect water resources in a way that has minimal impact on the environment.
The average water consumption in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur for 2016 is 234 liters per capita per day (l/c/d) based on the Malaysian Water Industry Guide (MSIG) 2017 annual report. This figure is much higher than the average recommended by World Health Organization, which is 165 l/c/d. If the average water consumption remains high, with the ever growing population, the existing treated water capacity might not meet the needs of customers. Bearing in mind that the population in Selangor is expected to increase to 10 million people in 2025, Air Selangor has taken the initiative by setting up a Water Conservation Unit to foster a prudent use of water among its users. Air Selangor has been carrying out various water conservation programmes with domestic, commercial and industrial customers, educational institutions, governmental agencies, charitable organizations and also religious places. Air Selangor has worked with several State Assemblymen to conduct water conservation programmes, raising awareness on the importance and need to conserve water for future water sustainability. During the programme, residents were provided with several water thimbles - plastic discs the size of a 10-sen coin with five holes in them which can be installed in their taps and shower heads. Installation of the water thimble will be able to reduce the water flow from the tap, thus it can reduce the use and wastage of water. Information of how to use water efficiently was shared to residents through presentation and Q&A sessions. Precise observation in Section 10, Petaling Jaya during a 6 month water conservation campaign, found that water usage was reduced by 5 l/c/d to 178 l/c/d, exceeding the target set for the programme. Air Selangor is hopeful in achieving the same at other regions and programmes with relevant parties is ongoing.
